Celebrating Life 050211
The news came on the radio late last night that Osama bin Laden had been assassinated. We hope there was no alternative; that American troops could not capture him and had no choice.
Regardless of the details of the death, we can not celebrate death. We pray that our nation and nations around the world do not become cultures of death, but instead, continue to celebrate the new life in Jesus Christ. Recall that Jesus was also assassinated, but by the Roman Empire.
Pray for peace, dear friends. The death of one individual will not bring peace, even when the dead were responsible for the deaths of so many innocent victims. Death leads to death.
Remember that with Jesus, as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians ‘….in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.’
1When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2Judah became God’s sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
3The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back.
4The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.
5Why is it, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back?
6O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?
7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.
36Then Gideon said to God, “In order to see whether you will deliver Israel by my hand, as you have said, 37I am going to lay a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will deliver Israel by my hand, as you have said.” 38And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. 39Then Gideon said to God, “Do not let your anger burn against me, let me speak one more time; let me, please, make trial with the fleece just once more; let it be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.” 40And God did so that night. It was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.
1 Corinthians 15:12-20
12Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. 19If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.
