Looking for a Sign 080611

In today’s verse from the Gospel narrates Jesus telling the Sadducees and Pharisees that they do not recognize the signs of the times before them

Today’s news claimed that the weather the US and the world is experiencing right now and all this year is the new normal—–unless and until it gets worse. April was the worst month in history and July was the hottest month, where we are in the central Midwest US.

Humankind’s greed, avarice and gluttony have produced a very dangerous situation on earth, whether we believe in global warming or not. Beyond the smaller issue of global warming is the larger issue of survival, food suppy, water supply and farming land. Of earth’s 7 billion people how many would kill for a drink of clean water?

As Christians we have a responsibility to God and to the earth to not allow that kind of final, devastating war to occur. We are supposed to be the people of Jesus’ peace, aren’t we?

Pray for peace, again and again

Psalm 105

1O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.

2Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works.

3Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

4Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.

5Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,

6O offspring of his servant Abraham, children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

16When he summoned famine against the land, and broke every staff of bread,

17he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.

18His feet were hurt with fetters, his neck was put in a collar of iron;

19until what he had said came to pass, the word of the Lord kept testing him.

20The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free.

21He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his possessions,

22to instruct his officials at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.

45that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the Lord!

Genesis 37:5-11

5Once Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. 6He said to them, “Listen to this dream that I dreamed. 7There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright; then your sheaves gathered around it, and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words. 9He had another dream, and told it to his brothers, saying, “Look, I have had another dream: the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him, and said to him, “What kind of dream is this that you have had? Shall we indeed come, I and your mother and your brothers, and bow to the ground before you?” 11So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Matthew 16:1-4

16The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.
