Jacob’s Dream 092011

I remember that we just recently talked about these verses (Genesis 28:10-17), “Jacob’s Dream at Bethel” at Peace Mennonite Church and that it made a touching impression on me. Jacob slept with a stone for his pillow and still had a wonderful dream! He saw a ladder set up on the earth, probably meaning a way upward to “heaven.” The Lord spoke to Jacob and promised to renew the blessings and said he’d be with Jacob through his journey to provide safety. What a splendid promise to Jacob, and to any person setting out alone to find his or her place and work in the world. The promise and the vision seem to say, “You think you have before you a lonesome journey, but the Lord and angels will be with you if you want their company.” It may look like a long, dusty road stretching away into the horizon. But the Lord will be there and will offer his care if you do not forget the vision and promise. This is a beautiful lesson to me, leading me to feel that God is always near and will stay with us always.

Peace,

‘L’

Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. 11He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12And he dreamed that there was a ladder* set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13And the Lord stood beside him* and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed* in you and in your offspring. 15Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ 16Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’ 17And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

Romans 16:17-20

Final Instructions

17 I urge you, brothers and sisters,* to keep an eye on those who cause dissensions and offences, in opposition to the teaching that you have learned; avoid them. 18For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites,* and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. 19For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise in what is good, and guileless in what is evil. 20The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.*
