Who Drag Sin Along As With Cart Ropes 060212

Those of us (most of us) who so far have missed the opportunity to learn Old Testament Hebrew will feel the pain today.

Listen to Isaiah! (Isaiah 5:18) Even in English his words strike deep—it painfully, relentlessly reminds me that it isn’t only sin which has a hold on me and won’t let go. It is I, it is me, who has a hold on sin, has memories and stories and anecdotes about sin, and won’t let go of whom. It’s like being in a wrestling match with the devil—it’d be good to get up and run away from it all, but it’s too scary to let up your hold or pin for a second!

Until we can read this in Hebrew and appreciate it again and again, Isaiah is clear enough now. Isaiah 5 says: 22Ah, you who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant at mixing drink, 23who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of their rights!  Maybe we’ve all known these heroes; so little changes in human history, day to day.

Psalm 29

Isaiah 5:15-24

John 15:18-20, 26-27

Psalm 29

1Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

2Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.

3The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.

4The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.

6He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.

8The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

10The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.

11May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Isaiah 5:15-24

15People are bowed down, everyone is brought low, and the eyes of the haughty are humbled. 16But the Lord of hosts is exalted by justice, and the Holy God shows himself holy by righteousness. 17Then the lambs shall graze as in their pasture, fatlings and kids shall feed among the ruins.

18Ah, you who drag iniquity along with cords of falsehood, who drag sin along as with cart ropes, 19who say, “Let him make haste, let him speed his work that we may see it; let the plan of the Holy One of Israel hasten to fulfillment, that we may know it!” 20Ah, you who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21Ah, you who are wise in your own eyes, and shrewd in your own sight! 22Ah, you who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant at mixing drink, 23who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of their rights! 24Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root will become rotten, and their blossom go up like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the Lord of hosts, and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

John 15:18-20, 26-27

18”If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world—therefore the world hates you. 20Remember the word that I said to you, ‘Servants are not greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

26”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.
